Alex has no memory of his death and the fully informed Gatekeeper is unable to share the information with him. Can Alex unlock the truth about his demise? Will the mysterious trio of Skylar, Icky and Ezra champion Alex as a Heavenbound bad guy or Hellbound good guy? Will you, the non-participant, be able to judge Alex or will you become trapped in the grey area of his psyche?

Heaven or hell?

Arran decided to write Hell’s Good Guy in 2019 as he was attending acting and it was a way of keeping him and his classmates working together. ‘The plan was to write a scripted story that we could all perform.’ The writing process involved spending 20 minutes a day over eight weeks during the months of January and February in 2020. Arran further details, ‘I wrote a solid plot and planned the structure before the word-for-word writing of Hell’s Good Guy started, this ensured I always knew where the story was heading.’ Solid indeed.

Were there any events or experiences that inspired the story/plot? Arran answers, ‘My own real life experiences and those of others close to me inspired many things seen in Hell’s Good Guy’. The protagonist of Alex and the supporting characters of Icky, Skylar and Ezra share traits from popular figures and characters such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Jim Carrey’s The Mask and WWE’s Vince McMahon. While the biggest difficulty Arran faced was the process of constructing a book and trying to get it to look right, from formatting the words and having a good book cover took its time and toll on his patience, but he got there in the end 🙌

Clocking in at 124 pages, currently the book has been receiving positive praise on the Waterstones website (pre-release reviews) and endorsements which pleases Arran, while his marketing plan is ‘to tell as many people as I can about the book.‘

Hells Angel

Waking up most days at 5am, Arran responds to a few emails and then goes to work in an office or customer fulfillment centre. Lockdown allowed him the time needed to continually re-read Hell’s Good Guy and tweak it to perfection. ‘If I could give my past self some advice, it would be to remember that over looking small details can end up being costly.’
